Dubrovnik celebrates St. Blaise Day for 1,037th time

Croatian Times

Dubrovnik began celebrating its patron saint’s day Monday evening.

The 1,037th celebration of the day (3 February) of St. Blaise, Dubrovnik’s patron saint whose statues grace city walls and gates, was opened with a traditional ceremony.

St. Blaise Day has been a special day in Dubrovnik since 972, when it was first celebrated.

This year’s celebration started with the release of white pigeons, the symbol of freedom and peace, in front of the church named for the saint and with the raising of the St. Blaise flag on the monument Orlando's Column.

The main celebration occurred yesterday (Tues), when reliquaries of St. Blaise were displayed during a procession of banners through city streets and into Stradun, the central part of the city.
