Croats drinking 27 million kuna worth of beer when Croatia plays

Croatian Times

Croatia's appearance at this year's European Football Championships in Poland and Ukraine is good news for the beer industry in Croatia. On match days alone when Croatia are playing, Croatians are drinking around 27 million kuna (close to 4 million Euros) worth of beer, writes daily newspaper Slobodna Dalmacija.

In June, Croatians usually drink around 400 thousand hectoliters of beer and consume about 13 thousand hectoliters of beer per day, but when Croatia play they are drinking 8 to 10 thousand hectoliters more, that means around 20 thousand hectoliters of beer they are drinking on game day.

Calculations show that in cafes alone, where 60 per cent of  beer is sold, Croats are spending at least 18 million kuna (2.6 million Euros), and in stores around 9 million kuna (1.3 million Euros).

During the Football World Cup in Germany in 2006, Croatian breweries produced 40 thousand hectoliters more beer than in the same month the previous year, achieving revenues of approximately 425 million kuna (60 million Euros).
