Concrete jungle destroying famous Korcula view

Locals on the Dalmatian island of Korcula, an island which has managed to maintain its historical elegance, are up in arms with the site of a massive concrete construction currently being errected, spoiling the famous Korcula view.
The Tommy company are building a shopping center at the entrance to the old town of Korcula, a project that was started by tycoon and Mayor of Split Zeljko Kerum, and it has upset the majority of locals who say that the view of the Gothic-Renaissance cathedral, the old town of stone houses and greenery is now destroyed by the gigantic concrete construction.
Questions are now being asked as to how permits were given for the 'devestation'.
Zana Baca, head of the Conservation Department in Dubrovnik, did not want to confirm whether they issued a permit to build the centre of this size. Indeed, said she could not remember whether or not such a license was issued.
"It is a mistake. You can not see the city now because of such a large building, it competes with the city. But our society has not been contacted by anyone, we would have responded earlier," said Frano Dulibic from the Art Historian Society. Facebook pages have been set up in protest of the contruction reports daily newspaper Jutarnji list.

Planning problems would not arise if planning applications were better publicized. Newspapers have a role in this, what space is provided for readers comments? A controversial scheme like this should have been put to the public, a strong democracy needs a "middle class" that is people who take an interest in what is happening around them not in only their own business but in that of others.
