Jewish community to re-build destroyed synagogue

The Jewish Community in Zagreb is planning to build a synagogue in place of the one destroyed during World War II in the capital's Praska street.

The project was suggested in 1986 by then head of the Jewish Community Slavko Goldstein, but only gained momentum in 1999 when the Croatian government returned the property in Vlaska to the community.

The construction of the synagogue has been in the pipeline since then because of a quarrel between the Jewish community and Bet Isreal, another branch that split off in 2005.

The President of the Jewish Community in Zagreb Ognjen Kraus says that the construction will begin this year.

"The biggest plan for this year is the construction of the synagogue. We will build a small synagogue in commemoration of the one that was previously there," Kraus said.
