Deputy PM's deadly accident trial continues

Croatian Deputy Prime Minister Radimir Cacic has arrived at Hungarian town of Kaposvar for a second hearing in a trial where he is accused of causing a car accident that killed two people in January 2010.
He was accompanied by his Hungarian lawyer, Peter Zamecsnik.
In addition to questioning witnesses of the accident, the court is expected to call an additional expert witness requested by the defence.
The first expert witness testimony concluded that Cacic drove 140 to 150 kilometres per hour when he hit the Skoda Fabia driven by Katlin Liptak. She was driving her 81-year-old mother Imrena Antal and 60-year-old husband Gyorgy Liptak. Both died from their injuries.
In addition to excessive speed, the expert witness concluded that the driver's delayed reaction was another cause for the accident.
In his first court appearance, Cacic said he felt regret and remorse as a human being, but that the charges were not correct as he did not drive too fast. He also said the visibility was poor.
Cacic faces up to five years in jail if found guilty. Many experts believe, however, that he will receive only a conditional sentence based on mitigating circumstances such as poor visibility, cooperation with the police and the fact that he was not intoxicated at the time of the accident, portal Index writes.
