Gotovina artwork praised

War crimes suspect Ante Gotovina has been praised for paintings of a Croatian religious figure.
The works depicting Ivan Merz, a Bosnian-Croatian lay academic beatified by Pope John-Paul II, were painted by Gotovina in between hearings at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague.
The Postulation of Blessed Ivan Merz which commissioned the works from Gotovina said the pictures show the suffering Merz endured in his life and drew a parallel with Gotovina’s imprisonment.
The group said in a statement: "Knowing who and in what circumstances this work came about it cannot be ignored that the artist, wittingly or unwittingly, wanted to express his anger through the figure of Blessed Ivan Merz placed in prison.
"On the face of the blessed Merz we can read his agony over the suffered injustice of ‘international justice’ that he is still going through. But through the figure of blessed Merz with whose spirit he identifies himself it is obvious Gotovina has not lost his faith but is heading towards freedom and God's light."
