First swine flu death in Croatia

Croatian Times

A 61-year-old man died on Saturday in Split hospital from swine flu, the first fatality in Croatia from the disease. He had massive organ failure.

The man was hospitalized on 21 October with serious health complications caused most probably by swine flu. He had a high fever, pneumonia and kidney failures.

Only an autopsy can confirm that swine flue caused the man’s death, but his family is strongly opposed to that.

Nikola Bradaric, the head of the infectious-diseases department at Split hospital, said:
"An autopsy could confirm what the cause of death was."

An epidemiologist from the public health department in Split and Dalmatian county said there had been 255 confirmed cases of swine flu in Split and Dalmatian County, but they believe the actual number is much higher.
