Price of honey up due to weak season

Croatian Times

The price of honey in Croatia has rocketed due to inclement weather affecting production.

The season was a hard one, with not enough honey even for the survival of the bees in some cases. It is estimated that the production halved last year.

The purchase price for the most-valued honey made out of sage has increased between 100 to 200 per cent compared to the last two years, to 45 kunas (6.16 Euros) per kilogram, beekeepers claim.

The owner and director of honey manufacturer Apimel Zlatko Gregacevic says that Croatian markets will not have a shortage of this product as the planned production is still between 4,500 and 5,000 tonnes. Croatians consume around 3,000 tonnes per year.

In a good year, production can be as much as 7,000 tonnes. Such high surpluses usually keep the prices in Croatia at the low end. With lesser production this year, some fear cheaper competition from China will flood the market. Gregacevic, however, is doubtful, saying protective taxes would not make such endeavors lucrative.

Some beekeepers believe that higher prices could lead to an influx of fake products, even corn syrup sold as honey, the daily Vecernji List writes.
