Internet shopping helps Croatian supermarket chains build business

The two Croatian supermarket chains have registered a 10 percent increase in sales in the last three months thanks to their online stores.
Both Konzum and Mercator say that the number of their online shoppers has also increased.
"We are very happy with our internet store and will continue to invest in it in 2010," a Konzum representative said. The chain currently has around 20,000 internet buyers.
Online shoppers comprise 10 to 15 percent of Mercator’s clients.
Internet shopping offers certain perks like evading long lines and unnecessary buys, but both chains also offer special sales online.
"The recession has influenced changes in consumer habits and resulted in a decrease in retail sales. Because of their lower purchasing power, buyers are choosing generic merchandise or sale items. We try to fulfill our clients’ needs, of course, so we offer online sales as well," a Mercator representative said.
Konzum offers free delivery of purchases costing 500 kuna (70 euros) or more.
