Zderic still counting on highway contract in Montenegro

Zeljko Zderic, the head of Croatian construction company Konstruktor, believes three Croatian construction companies have a chance to get a highway construction contract in Montenegro worth 2.77 billion Euros.
The Croatian consortium, which includes construction companies Konstruktor, Tehnika and IGH, submitted the winning bid for construction of 188 kilometres of highway between Bar and Boljare in March 2009. But they lost the contract because they failed to obtain a written bank guarantee for the work.
In an interview in the new edition of the weekly Vrime, Zderic said he believed they could get "back into the game" and employ a few thousand people.
Zderic said a deal with the other bidders, Greek Aktor and Israeli Construction and Housing, had not been agreed to.
Asked why he was so optimistic, he said: "Everything the Croatia public knows about the deal in Montenegro is not true. The main problem is the different points of view of the Montenegro government and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) about the order of work on some highway sections.
"The Montenegro government insists the highway should be built from Podgorica in a northerly direction, but the bank wants it built from Bar to Podgorica and and only then to the north," he said.
