Crisis makes some Croatians look abroad for work

Despite the crisis, foreign labourers can still find jobs in some European countries like Germany, where 810 Croatians went in January to look for work.
Germany is the only country that has a temporary-worker arrangement with Croatia, the daily Vecernji List has reported.
Around 5,000 people find work there every year, most filling vacancies in the agricultural sector as strawberry and asparagus pickers and earning up to 1,377 euros a month. Construction, tourism and health-care are other segments the employ many Croatian workers.
In Italy, there are approximately 25,000 Croatians working legally and about as many undocumented workers. There are around 8,000 women from Dalmatia, Istria and the Kvarner region working legally, most often as domestic help and as caretakers for the elderly. More than 10,000, however, are there without papers.
A quick look at some of the foreign media reveals that there is demand in Austria’s labour market for waiters, cooks and electricians, while masons and engineers can still find work in Slovenia. Italy seems to be desperate for nurses, having 40,000 vacancies.
