Companies are saving on employee foreign-language courses

The Centre for Foreign Languages in Split said today (Tues) there had been a drastic decline in the number of companies willing to pay for foreign-language courses for their employees in 2009 and in 2010.
Centre head Ana Mijan told the Croatian Times many companies had decided not to pay for such courses because of the finance crisis.
Mijan said: "We have a situation in which parents are aware their children need to learn foreign languages and even adults are saving money to pay for foreign-language lessons but one in which many companies involved in tourism have decided not to pay for foreign- language lessons any more or to pay for only few hours of lessons, which are not enough. Many banks, hotels and institutions are among them."
The centre, founded in 1957, introduced the European Language Map and levels of the Council of Europe from A1 to C2 in 2003 to align levels of foreign-language knowledge with European standards.
The Centre also has a newly-opened Knowledge Centre for adult education and conducts programmes approved by the Ministry of Education.
