This will be the scene on Hamburg's underground from next year where passengers can get off the train and - after using a smart phone App - climb straight into a car or bike as part of an ambitious plan to make vehicle rental rather than ownership the norm.
Local public transport officials say that more people than ever are travelling with the network. Last year 423 million people used the city's public transport, an increase of three per cent on the previous year.
Hamburg Rail boss Günter Elste, 63, said: "We want to strengthen this trend. We hope to make owning your own car in Hamburg something regarded more as 'over the top' than the norm.
By 2020 he hopes to introduce in 30 train station locations rental cars, short term rent cards, rent a bikes and taxis to make travelling around the city more convenient.
The App will allow passengers to see where these services are available and to book them direct from their phones.
Hochbahn plans to start the project with funding for two years from May 2013.
