Rubbish Ship

croatiantimes.com

Environmentalists are calling for another ship to join this loan specially adapted vessel set up to scoop rubbish out of the massive Three Gorges Dam in China.

They estimate that every year up to 40,000 tonnes of floating garbage wash down the river and much of it accumulates at the dam especially during the flood period.

But the special vessel created to scoop the rubbish out of the water for proper disposal is unable to cope with even a fraction – removing little more than 100 tons before the rubbish continues on its journey to the sea.

Local green activist Kang Wu said that many locals did collect rubbish from the shore but it was much more efficient to scoop the waste out of the sea with a vessel.

He said: "Many Chinese see the river as a giant garbage chute and fling any old household rubbish there. But companies are also bad and industrial waste also ends up in the river."
