To boldly go

croatiantimes.com

A super sensitive electronic 'nose' heading for the International Space Station above Earth has been fitted with special filters to screen out the whiff of what happens when astronauts boldly go.

The sensor - invented by scientists in Italy - is supposed to sniff out the early signs of chemical contamination or mechanical failure.

But scientists added an extra layer of filters when they realised in tests it was picking up the powerful pong of astronauts in a confined space.

"Space ships are full of pretty vile smells from men living on top of each other. Going to the loo at close quarters is not pleasant and the readings were being affected," said one researcher.
