Farmers milk profits

croatiantimes.com

Shocked wildlife experts have discovered the grim consequences of growing demand for Italy's once rare buffalo mozzarella cheese.

The cheese - once a delicacy enjoyed only by gourmets - has now become common in British supermarkets and kitchens.

But the pressure to produce more and more of the distinctive cheese is causing massive financial pressure on Italian farmers.

Animal welfare investigators are this week probing a mass grave of scores of young buffalo bulls in Castel Volturno, southern Italy, believed to have been slaughtered by their owners to save cash.

Local forest ranger chief Nicola Costantino said: "The local breeders kill the young male buffalos because they don't produce milk no-one eats their meat."
