Condom protest in front of Zagreb cathedral

Activists sent condoms flying into the sky in front of Zagreb cathedral on Sunday morning in a protest against the Catholic Church's stance on contraceptives and HIV/AIDS.

Centre for Peace Studies activists said the protest just before mass at the cathedral was a reaction to comments from the Pontiff in March who said that the use of condoms in Africa could make the continent’s problems with AIDS and HIV worse.

They said that Pope Benedict XVI should instead tell young people to protect themselves from sexually transmitted diseases using condoms.

The activists said they hoped the inflated condoms would be blown by winds to the Vatican.
